Dutch GP: Antonelli Leads Norris in First Practice

The Dutch Grand Prix kicked off with an exciting first practice session, as Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes set the pace, leading the field by a narrow margin.

Antonelli, who holds a commanding 50-point lead in the drivers’ championship, clocked a time of 0.121 seconds faster than his nearest rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Norris, fresh from his victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, was closely followed by his fellow Brit, George Russell, in the other Mercedes.

Ferrari’s Hamilton in Pursuit

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, was hot on the heels of the leaders, placing his Ferrari fourth, just 0.190 seconds off the pace.

The session saw a strong showing from the top teams, with Charles Leclerc in the other Ferrari and Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren rounding out the top six.

Honda’s Encouraging Start

One of the standout performances came from the new Honda engine in the Aston Martin, driven by Fernando Alonso.

Alonso, a two-time world champion, finished the session in 12th place, just 1.562 seconds behind the leader, suggesting the new engine is delivering the performance gains Aston Martin had hoped for.

While Honda still has ground to make up on the leading engine manufacturers, this result provides a positive indication of their progress.

Red Bull’s Verstappen Struggles

Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, had a challenging session, managing only 11th place.

His Red Bull team-mate, Liam Lawson, who was promoted from the junior team, Racing Bulls, after Isack Hadjar’s unfortunate wrist injury, finished in 14th.
