Dominican Republic Resort Fire: Tragedy and Evacuation

Fire at Dominican Resort Claims Life

A fire at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in the Dominican Republic has resulted in the tragic death of an Italian tourist and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests.

The fire, which broke out early Friday morning, quickly spread across the resort due to windy conditions and flammable thatched roofs.

Emergency Response and Investigation

DAEH emergency services confirmed the death of the 46-year-old woman and reported that three people were hospitalized, with six others treated on-site.

Drone footage reveals the extent of the fire, with multiple buildings ablaze and thick smoke rising.

An initial investigation attributes the rapid spread to the wind and roof materials, but the cause remains under investigation.

Guest Safety and Support

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has assured that the fire is now under control, and all guests have been relocated to alternative accommodations.

The COE also confirmed that tourist activities in the area remain unaffected, ensuring visitors can continue their travels.

The Italian embassy is providing support to around 285 Italian nationals, assisting with emergency passports and travel arrangements.

Resort Town and Company Response

Bayahibe, known for its stunning beaches and clear waters, is a popular Caribbean destination.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which franchises the affected resort, has been contacted for comment.

The company’s response and support for guests and staff will be a key focus as the investigation unfolds.

Despite the tragedy, the swift action of emergency services and the resort’s management has ensured the safety of most guests, with the town’s tourism industry set to recover quickly.
