India’s ‘A’ Rating for The Devil Wears Prada 2: A Baffling Decision

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has sparked curiosity with its decision to award an 'A' rating to The Devil Wears Prada 2, a film that many believe should have been given a more lenient rating. This rating restricts the film to audiences aged 18 and above, a stark contrast to the ratings given by other countries.

Bollywood Hungama's investigation reveals that India is the only country in the world to deem The Devil Wears Prada 2 unsuitable for minors. In countries like Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, and Spain, the film is accessible to children as young as 6 or 7, with minor restrictions in some cases. Even in countries like Turkey, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, the film is rated for audiences above 10, 15, and 15 respectively, allowing younger viewers when accompanied by adults.

The CBFC's decision is particularly puzzling when compared to the ratings given by other major censor boards. In Brazil, Hungary, the UK, and many other countries, the film has received a 12 rating, while in the US and UAE, it's suitable for those above 13. The film has even been granted a PG13 rating in Lebanon and Vietnam, allowing younger teens to watch it.

This situation is reminiscent of the 2016 musical La La Land, which also received an 'A' rating in India despite its family-friendly content. The CBFC's criteria for such ratings remain unclear, especially when the film industry is striving to attract families back to theaters.

Despite the restrictive rating, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is performing well at the Indian box office. However, the CBFC's decision has left many wondering about the rationale behind it, and an explanation is warranted to ensure transparency and consistency in the certification process.
