Delhi High Court Dismisses Celina Jaitly’s Petition for Consular Access to Detained Brother
In a recent development, the Delhi High Court has brought closure to a petition filed by former actor Celina Jaitly, who sought consular access to her brother, Vikrant Jaitly, currently detained in the United Arab Emirates.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav presided over the hearing on March 16, 2024, and made a decision based on the circumstances presented. The court was informed that Vikrant had already been granted consular access but had declined legal assistance, opting to handle legal matters through his wife.
Celina's petition included a request for authorities to assist with her brother's legal expenses. The court acknowledged this request and confirmed that Vikrant had been informed of the offer. However, Vikrant firmly stated that he did not wish to be represented by any law firm.
Furthermore, the court was notified that a law firm had offered pro bono legal assistance, but Vikrant did not accept the proposal. The court directed officials to communicate this offer to Vikrant, but he maintained his decision to decline.
Celina had also sought direct communication with her brother, but Vikrant declined this request as well. During the proceedings, Vikrant's wife requested that the court keep further case details confidential. The court noted that state authorities are working in consultation with Vikrant.
In its final decision, the court instructed authorities to maintain contact with Vikrant and provide any legal assistance available. The court concluded that there was no reason to keep the petition pending, given the developments and Vikrant's expressed wishes.
Vikrant Jaitly has been reported as detained in the UAE since September 6, 2024, and the case has garnered attention due to Celina Jaitly's celebrity status.
