David Dhawan’s Fascinating Trivia
The David Dhawan Film Festival is going on in PVR and to celebrate the legendary director, the multiplex chain organized a fireside chat. It involved David Dhawan talking about his life and films with his son, Varun Dhawan. Incidentally, both are also gearing up for the release of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The comic caper will arrive in cinemas on June 5.
David Dhawan was his usual self and raised laughs while sharing anecdotes, especially about Taaqatwar and Shola Aur Shabnam (1992).
David Dhawan said, “With Taaqatwar, I was basically making Amar Akbar Anthony! Usme se bas ek character nikal do aap (laughs). My film had the characters of Anthony and Amar, who was a cop. Now, for Anthony’s role, who could be better than Govinda?”
He added, “Govinda’s name in the film was John D’Mello. We even had a song ‘John D’Mello Ding Dong Wala’. You won’t believe Amit ji had danced to the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’ in Amar Akbar Anthony. Do you know it was shot in a hotel in Juhu next to Sun N Sand? It had a hall where the song was picturized on Amit ji. Kamal master was the choreographer. I got Kamal master to do the song ‘John D’Mello Ding Dong Wala’, that too in the same hall!”
Later, David Dhawan raised laughs as he said, “A few of my films didn’t work. Aandhiyan (1990) had flopped. That time, a film was released, Ghayal (1990). The same day, one more film was released, Dil (1990). I watched both films on the same day. Dil was very entertaining, while Ghayal was something else. Those were the days when I was wondering what I should make next. I then made Shola Aur Shabnam. And do you know what the story is? The first half is inspired by Dil, and the second half is inspired by Ghayal!”
