David Brat, Ayn Rand Advocate, Appointed US Ambassador to Australia
In a significant diplomatic move, US President Donald Trump has appointed David Brat as the new US ambassador to Australia. This announcement ends a 15-month vacancy in Canberra, a crucial ally in the Asia-Pacific region.
Brat, a Republican with a Masters of Divinity, represented Virginia in Congress for two terms until 2018. He is currently a vice-president of business relations at Liberty University in Virginia.
The White House nominated Brat for Senate confirmation on Tuesday, Australian time. The position has been vacant since Caroline Kennedy, appointed by former President Joe Biden, left in November 2024. This appointment comes at a critical juncture in US-Australian relations, with tensions arising from Australia's stance on the Iran conflict and the strait of Hormuz.
Brat, a 61-year-old native of rural Michigan, has a diverse academic background. He holds a PhD in economics from American University and a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he explored the intersection of logical positivism and economic science. His academic work also includes a paper advocating for the merger of capitalism and Christianity, reflecting his unique perspective on the role of government.
Described as a 'Tea Party professor' by Time magazine, Brat co-authored a paper on the moral foundations of Ayn Rand's writing. His political career includes a notable upset in 2014, defeating the then House of Representatives majority leader, Eric Cantor, in a Virginia Republican primary, which ended Cantor's political career.
The appointment comes as Australia's new ambassador to Washington, Greg Moriarty, takes office. The US chargé d’affaires in Canberra, Erika Olsen, is also due to depart soon, making Brat's appointment timely and significant.
The Australian government has pledged to work with Brat, emphasizing respect for diplomatic sovereignty. Senate confirmation for this role is expected to take several weeks or months, ensuring a thorough vetting process.
