New Zealand Braces for Tropical Cyclone Vaianu
New Zealand is gearing up for a powerful tropical cyclone, Vaianu, which is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region.
The category 3 cyclone, with winds exceeding 150km/h, is currently moving south of Fiji towards New Zealand. The MetService has issued strong wind watches for the entire North Island, as the cyclone's path remains uncertain.
Despite the uncertainty, the MetService predicts that Cyclone Vaianu will likely reach New Zealand on Sunday, bringing damaging and potentially life-threatening conditions. The prime minister, Christopher Luxon, has urged agencies to be on full alert and encouraged residents to prepare for the storm.
"It's crucial for New Zealanders to take proactive measures, such as stocking up on supplies and securing loose items," said Prime Minister Luxon. Meteorologist John Law emphasized the need for early preparation, as the cyclone's impact is expected to be significant.
New Zealand has experienced severe storms in the past, including Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, which caused devastating landslides and became the country's most expensive weather-related event.
As the country braces for Cyclone Vaianu, residents are advised to stay informed and follow official guidance to ensure their safety during this challenging weather event.
