Real Madrid Sign Cucurella: Will Fernandez Be Next?

Cucurella’s Move to Real Madrid

In a swift transfer move, Marc Cucurella has officially joined Real Madrid just hours before his World Cup debut with Spain. The 27-year-old defender’s deal, worth up to £51.8m, was announced on Monday morning, leaving many wondering if his former Chelsea teammate, Enzo Fernandez, will follow suit.

Sources in Spain indicate that the agreement with Chelsea progressed rapidly, and a similar scenario could unfold with Fernandez. However, the key factor is Madrid’s willingness to invest a significant fee for the midfielder, who is valued at £120m by Chelsea.

Fernandez’s Future

The situation surrounding Fernandez is intriguing. While Chelsea values him highly, re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has hinted at a potential signing worth 150m euros (£129.6m), suggesting funds could be allocated to secure Fernandez’s services.

Well-placed sources reveal that Fernandez is eager to leave Chelsea and join Real Madrid, despite interest from Manchester City and Paris St-Germain. It appears to be a Madrid or bust scenario for the midfielder, who contributed 15 goals and seven assists last season.

Chelsea’s Perspective

Chelsea, under new manager Xabi Alonso, are content to keep Fernandez, who is under contract until 2032. However, the sale of Cucurella makes financial sense for the club, especially after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

The deal represents a small loss on the £60m paid to sign Cucurella from Brighton in 2022, but due to transfer fee amortization, it results in a profit of around £17.5m in accounting terms.

With Cucurella turning 28 next month and having three years left on his contract, Chelsea may have seized the last chance to maximize his value.

Chelsea’s Squad Dynamics

Cucurella’s departure could impact Chelsea’s squad dynamics. He was one of their most consistent performers over the last two seasons, and his exit reduces the average age of an already youthful squad.

The emergence of Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, signed from Ajax last summer, adds an exciting dimension. Hato impressed in the final months of the season under Liam Rosenior and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane, suggesting Chelsea may not need to reinforce the left-back position.

Chelsea is also expected to sign Valentin Barco from partner club Strasbourg. Barco, primarily a midfielder, has experience playing left-back, further strengthening their options.

Real Madrid’s Rebuilding Efforts

Real Madrid’s signing of Cucurella is part of a broader rebuilding strategy under returning manager Jose Mourinho. They aim to strengthen their squad after finishing second in their domestic league and exiting the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot commented on Cucurella’s move, saying, “For Jose Mourinho, that’s the type of player he wants. Jose wants a player he can count on. His mentality has to be right, and he has to have the spirit and winning mentality.”

As Real Madrid continues to reshape their squad, the question remains: will Enzo Fernandez be the next piece in their puzzle?
