Corn Snake’s Coastal Adventure: A Tale of Travel and Rescue
A Snake’s Journey
A corn snake has made an unexpected journey, travelling from Bridlington to Scarborough, a distance of approximately 17 miles (27km), all while hidden in a car engine.
The snake, which has since been reunited with its owner, was spotted on top of a car bonnet in Scarborough, much to the surprise of onlookers.
The Rescue Mission
Dave Bigsby, a reptile expert from Lilly’s Reptile Rescue Centre, was called to the scene to retrieve the adventurous snake.
“It seems like the snake fancied a bit of sightseeing and decided to explore Scarborough,” said Bigsby, adding a touch of humor to the situation.
The rescue mission, however, wasn’t without its challenges. When Bigsby arrived, the snake was nowhere to be found. Fortunately, a photo taken by a witness helped identify the snake as a corn snake.
The real challenge began when they had to wait for the car’s owner to return and reveal the snake’s hiding spot.
A Hidden Passenger
The snake had cleverly concealed itself in the car’s engine bay, a tricky spot to access.
“The driver opened the engine bay, and there it was, sitting above the strut spring,” Bigsby recounted.
Extracting the snake from its hiding place was no easy feat. Bigsby had to hold onto the snake’s tail for two hours before it finally relented and allowed itself to be rescued.
A First for the Rescue Centre
This incident marks a unique experience for Bigsby and his rescue centre.
“We’ve had snakes in various places, but this is the first time we’ve had one in a car engine bay,” he said.
The snake is now safely back at the rescue centre, awaiting its owner’s collection on Tuesday.
Bigsby praised the snake’s temperament, describing it as “beautiful” and well-behaved.
This story serves as a reminder of the unexpected adventures our pets can embark on and the importance of being vigilant, especially when it comes to keeping an eye on our slithering friends.
