Heroic Aid Worker Loses Life in East Congo Drone Strike

A humanitarian tragedy has unfolded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a French UN aid worker lost her life in a drone strike in the east. Karine Buisset, a dedicated aid worker for Unicef, was among the three individuals killed in the attack that targeted a residential area in Goma.

The attack has been condemned by the M23 rebel group and the Congolese government, with both parties accusing each other of being responsible for the strike. Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the Congo River Alliance group of rebels, called the attack an 'intolerable provocation' targeting innocent civilians.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, urged respect for humanitarian law and expressed his condolences to the family of the aid worker. Unicef has also condemned the killing of its staff member, stating that it is a 'painful reminder' that humanitarian workers must be protected.

The incident highlights the escalating conflict in the region, with the increasing use of drone warfare by both parties. The US has recently imposed sanctions on the Rwandan army and its senior officials, accusing them of supporting M23.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to over 100 armed groups, with the M23 rebel group occupying swathes of eastern DRC and establishing parallel governments in the territories it controls.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for peace and stability in the region.
