Hawaii’s Trailblazer: Colleen Hanabusa’s Legacy

Colleen Hanabusa, a trailblazer in Hawaiian politics, has passed away at the age of 74, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of breaking barriers and advocating for her community.

Hanabusa's journey began in Waianae, Oahu, where her family's auto service station laid the foundation for her future leadership. Rising to become the first woman president of the Hawaii state senate, she shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for women in politics.

Her political career spanned various roles, including her tenure as a state senator from 1999 to 2010, representing the Waianae Coast and Leeward Oahu. Hanabusa's dedication to her community was evident in her advocacy and determination.

In 2012, Hanabusa's aspirations took a significant turn when US Senator Daniel Inouye expressed his last wish for her to succeed him. However, then-governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Brian Schatz, leading Hanabusa to run for the Senate seat in 2014. Despite a narrow loss, her determination to fulfill Inouye's wish showcased her commitment to democratic ideals.

Hanabusa's political journey continued as she recaptured her US House seat in 2016, expressing her disappointment in Donald Trump's victory. Her willingness to challenge the status quo and stand for her beliefs demonstrated her unwavering commitment to her constituents.

In 2021, Honolulu's mayor recognized Hanabusa's expertise by appointing her to the board of the city's rail line project, a testament to her continued influence.

Governor Josh Green's tribute to Hanabusa highlights her impact: 'Her legacy of leadership and public service will inspire generations.' Hanabusa's life serves as a beacon, encouraging women and underrepresented communities to pursue leadership roles and make their voices heard.
