The European Society of Cardiology and European Association of Preventive Cardiology have released a 'clinical consensus statement' outlining essential recommendations for heart patients and those at risk.

The statement encourages individuals to cook at home more frequently, emphasizing the benefits of fresh and minimally processed foods. By doing so, people can reduce their intake of UPFs, which are often high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Cardiologists are urged to initiate discussions about UPFs with patients and provide practical advice on healthier alternatives.

The consensus statement also highlights the importance of mindful eating habits. Patients are advised to eat slowly and chew their food thoroughly, as this can enhance satiety and reduce overeating. Additionally, avoiding late-night meals and replacing sugary drinks with water are recommended to support overall heart health.

The recommendations are based on extensive research, which confirms the link between UPF consumption and various health risks. These include obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and an increased likelihood of dying from cardiovascular disease. By following these guidelines, individuals can take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

However, the British Heart Foundation's senior dietitian, Tracy Parker, emphasizes that individuals can only do so much on their own. She calls for government action to create a healthier food environment, supporting individuals in their efforts to reduce UPF intake.
