Burnham: Virtual Interviews Don’t Showcase Your Best Self

PM’s Concern for Young Job Seekers

In a recent interview on Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future podcast, Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his concern about the impact of virtual interviews on young job seekers. With over a million 16 to 25-year-olds not in work or education, and vacancies at a five-year low, the job market is already challenging.

Burnham believes that relying solely on virtual interviews may hinder candidates from showcasing their true potential, especially when it comes to personality and passion.

AI’s Role in Recruitment

AI is increasingly being used in the hiring process, with 89% of UK recruiters planning to incorporate more AI this year. While AI can efficiently sift through applications, it may not be the best tool for assessing soft skills and personal qualities.

Young people have shared their experiences of applying for hundreds of jobs and receiving no feedback, describing the process as “robotic and brutal.”

Human Connection in Hiring

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) emphasizes the importance of human connection in recruitment. Online interviews can be useful, especially in early stages, but they should not replace in-person interactions.

Maxine Bligh, REC’s chief membership and innovation officer, advises recruiters to “go digital where it matters and human where it counts.” This balanced approach ensures that candidates have the opportunity to make a personal impression.

Addressing the Youth Employment Challenge

The government is taking steps to address the youth employment crisis. Burnham proposes prioritizing government contracts for companies offering six-week work placements for teenagers, providing valuable practical experience.

Additionally, the PM suggests senior executives offer shadowing opportunities to young people without established networks, fostering mentorship and guidance.

These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between education and employment, offering young adults a chance to develop essential skills and gain a competitive edge in the job market.
