From January 2020 to July 2025, fifteen “big cats” were reported to authorities in Wales, ranging from a Canadian lynx to a puma-sized feline.

A Leopard in the Garden

One resident of Cwmtwrch, Swansea, had a close encounter on January 16, 2023. They reported seeing a leopard with spots walking around their garden, but their dog didn’t react, and security lights kept triggering as the cat moved.

Despite the detailed description, no evidence was submitted, and officials couldn’t reach the reporter for further discussion.

Panther on the Prowl

Another sighting, this time of a “panther,” occurred on May 30, 2023, between Capel Bangor and Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. The witness, while driving, saw a large black cat leap over a hedge and land on the road, before pouncing across and disappearing over another hedge.

Described as jet black with a short coat, muscular build, and a long tail, the cat was compared to the size of a Labrador. The reporter identified it as a panther after seeing photos online.

The Mystery of the Canadian Lynx

Perhaps the most intriguing sighting was of a Canadian lynx in Port Henri, Carmarthenshire, on May 13, 2025. This elusive creature, native to North America, is not typically found in Wales.

The report didn’t lead to any action, leaving the mystery of its presence unsolved.
