Australian MP Helen Haines in Critical Condition After Car Attack
Australian MP Struck by Car in Apparent Deliberate Act
Australian MP Helen Haines is in a critical condition after being struck by a car in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described as “a deliberate act”. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Wangaratta, north-east of Melbourne, Victoria.
Counter-Terrorism Police Involved in Investigation
The Prime Minister confirmed that counter-terrorism police are involved in the investigation. Haines, a 65-year-old Independent MP for the Indi division in Victoria, was hit by a White Toyota Landcruiser driven by a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee.
The suspect was arrested at the scene by a passer-by and taken into custody by police. A knife was also found inside the vehicle.
Victorian Police Investigate Possible Motive
Victoria Police stated that it is unclear whether the suspect and Haines knew each other, and their investigation is ongoing. Haines, a former nurse and midwife, has been a prominent figure in Australian politics since her election to the House of Representatives in 2019, and was re-elected in 2022 and 2025.
Tributes and Support Pour in for Haines
Tributes have been pouring in for Haines, with Prime Minister Albanese describing her as “incredibly hard-working” and “a thoroughly decent human being full of integrity”. He added that the attack would come as an “incredible shock” to her community.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the incident a “deeply disturbing attack”, while Victoria’s Premier Ben Carroll expressed his deep concern. Opposition leader Angus Taylor also offered his support, stating, “No-one should be targeted in this way.” The incident has sent shockwaves through the political community and the nation.
As the investigation continues, the nation awaits further updates on Haines’s condition and the motive behind this disturbing incident.
