Australian Army Appoints First Female Chief
In a groundbreaking move, the Australian Army has appointed Lt Gen Susan Coyle as its new chief, marking a historic moment in the nation's military leadership. This announcement comes as part of a series of senior defense changes, including the promotion of V Adm Mark Hammond to Chief of Defense Force.
Coyle, an experienced officer with over three decades of service, will take up her new role in July. The Defense Minister, Richard Marles, praised Coyle as a 'standout candidate' for the position, highlighting her exceptional qualifications and leadership skills.
The current Chief of Navy, V Adm Mark Hammond, has been promoted to the top defense post, replacing the retiring Adm David Johnston. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended Hammond's distinguished 40-year career in the Royal Australian Navy, emphasizing his valuable contributions to the defense force.
Hammond's journey in the navy began in 1986 as an electronics technician, and he later became a naval officer. He served on the Collins-class submarines, commanded the HMAS Farncomb across the Indo-Pacific, and held a diplomatic post in Washington DC. In July 2022, he was appointed as the head of the navy, overseeing the Aukus nuclear submarine deal.
As Coyle prepares to lead the army, she brings a wealth of experience. She joined the army reserve in 1987 and graduated as an officer from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1991. Coyle has held critical positions, including head of information warfare, commander of Joint Task Force 633 in the Middle East, and commander of Task Group Afghanistan. She has led troops on deployments to Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands, and Afghanistan.
Coyle's appointment is a significant milestone for women in the Australian military. In 2024, she noted that when she enlisted, only 10% of personnel were women, and the highest-ranked female soldier was a colonel. Today, there are four female three-star generals, and Coyle's achievement will inspire future generations of women in the defense force.
