Afghanistan Truck Crash Claims 18 Lives, Including 10 Children
A devastating truck crash in eastern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of 18 people, including 10 children, according to a provincial official. This tragic incident occurred on Saturday when the truck, carrying Afghan families returning from Pakistan, overturned.
The spokesperson for the governor of Laghman province, Abdul Malik Niazay, confirmed the fatalities, stating that 18 people had died, including a significant number of children, women, and men. Additionally, 29 individuals sustained injuries in the accident.
The accident took place on the road connecting Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan to the capital city of Kabul. This route has witnessed numerous deadly traffic crashes due to various factors, including poor road conditions, reckless driving, and inadequate regulation.
The recent tragedy sheds light on the broader issue of road safety in Afghanistan, where such incidents are all too common. The country's road network has suffered from decades of conflict, resulting in poor infrastructure. Combined with dangerous driving practices and a lack of enforcement, this has created a challenging environment for road users.
Furthermore, the incident highlights the challenges faced by Afghan migrants and refugees returning from neighboring countries. Authorities in Pakistan have adopted a stricter approach towards Afghan migrants, leading to an increase in families traveling back to Afghanistan, often in trucks loaded with their belongings.
This year alone, over 447,400 Afghans have returned from Pakistan, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration. The journey home can be perilous, as evidenced by last August's collision between a bus carrying Afghan migrants and two other vehicles, which resulted in the loss of 78 lives, including 19 children.
