Nissan’s Sunderland Plant: A New Chapter with Chery

Nissan, the renowned Japanese carmaker, has taken a significant step towards securing the future of its Sunderland plant in northern England. In a recent development, the company has entered into a non-binding agreement to explore the possibility of manufacturing vehicles for Chery, a Chinese automotive brand with state ownership.

The deal, if finalized, will see Nissan producing cars for Chery International UK at its Sunderland facility, specifically on production line 1, starting in the 2027 financial year. This strategic move is a testament to Nissan's commitment to the UK market and its adaptability in the face of global challenges.

Chery has been making waves in the UK automotive industry, with its Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo brands gaining traction. The Jaecoo 7, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) manufactured in China, even topped the sales charts in the UK in March, showcasing the brand's potential.

Massimiliano Messina, chair at Nissan for European markets, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "This is an important step forward for our operations. We are looking forward to working with Chery International UK to find a mutually beneficial position." The Sunderland plant, employing around 6,000 workers, is renowned for its efficiency, producing popular models like the Qashqai SUV, Juke crossover SUV, and the electric Leaf.

However, Nissan has faced challenges, including turmoil within its parent company in Japan and the slow recovery of European car sales post-pandemic. The company is undergoing a global restructuring process, which has led to plant closures in Japan and job cuts across Europe, although the Sunderland consolidation did not result in job losses.

The potential collaboration with Chery is a ray of hope for the Sunderland plant, as it opens up new opportunities for growth and stability. Chery's ambition to become a top-three manufacturer in Britain, as stated by Gary Lan, UK CEO of Omoda and Jaecoo, further underscores the significance of this deal.

While the specifics of the vehicle types to be produced remain undisclosed, the partnership holds immense potential for both Nissan and Chery, as well as the UK automotive industry as a whole.
