Trump’s Plea for Jimmy Lai’s Freedom: Xi Jinping’s ‘Tough One’
US President Donald Trump has revealed that he discussed the case of Hong Kong democracy activist Jimmy Lai with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their recent summit in Beijing. Trump's efforts, however, did not yield the desired outcome, as Xi described the situation as a 'tough one'.
Jimmy Lai, a 78-year-old British citizen and media tycoon, was a prominent figure in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement. He was arrested in 2020 and sentenced to 20 years in prison under China's controversial national security law.
Lai's family and supporters had high hopes that Trump's intervention could secure his release. Lai's daughter, Claire, expressed gratitude for Trump's efforts, stating that he has a reputation for liberating the unjustly detained.
The situation is particularly concerning due to Lai's deteriorating health. His legal team has raised concerns about his medical condition, which includes diabetes. Lai's children have reported that he is kept in solitary confinement without air conditioning, and the summer temperatures in the jail reach a scorching 44°C (111°F).
Trump's comments on Air Force One and in a subsequent Fox News interview indicate that Xi was more receptive to the case of a detained church pastor than to Lai's situation. Trump's words suggest a sense of disappointment and a lack of optimism regarding Lai's release.
Lai's case has garnered international attention, especially in the UK, where his imprisonment is seen as a violation of the democratic principles promised during the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule.
