Detained Teen’s Hope Amidst ICE Detention

Olivia, a young asylum seeker from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been detained at the Dilley Immigration processing center in Texas for over four months. Each day feels like an eternity as she endures the harsh reality of detention.

The 19-year-old was apprehended with her family in November and separated, only to be reunited and separated again. Since then, Olivia has been struggling with the emotional toll of her situation.

The conditions at these facilities were challenging. Olivia was made to wear an orange jumpsuit and shackles, leaving scars on her wrists and ankles. She recalls the cold at one facility, where her coat was confiscated, and the poor food quality at Dilley, where detainees found hair and bugs in their meals.

Despite the hardships, Olivia finds solace in the small moments. She cherishes the time she gets to spend with her family during visits, even if it's just an hour on weekdays. She also enjoys watching crime procedurals and hospital dramas on TV, a welcome distraction from her reality.

Olivia's appeal process could take a year, and she struggles with the uncertainty of her future. She has lost weight and finds it difficult to eat due to a lack of appetite and unappetizing food. A recent report by Raíces and Human Rights First documented the poor conditions and psychological harm inflicted on families at Dilley.
