Gaza’s Shifting Boundaries

Umm Mohammed al-Shawish, a resident of Gaza, expresses her despair: “We’ve been displaced from place to place, and now we have nowhere left to go.” This sentiment reflects the recent developments in Gaza, where Israel’s army is constructing new barriers, altering the landscape and the lives of its inhabitants.

The al-Shawish family, among others, found themselves in a dire situation after Israel moved yellow concrete blocks marking its control in the Gaza Strip. This shift in boundaries has led to the displacement of families and the destruction of homes.

Ceasefire Agreement and Yellow Line

The US-brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas in October 2023 aimed to establish a designated demarcation, known as the Yellow Line. However, recent statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicate a different reality. Netanyahu claims the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control more than 60% of Gaza’s territory, with a directive to expand further.

Hamas alleges that Israel is violating the ceasefire agreement by moving the Yellow Line westwards, while Israel denies these claims, asserting that its actions are necessary to protect its citizens and prevent Hamas from rebuilding its military capabilities.

Barrier Construction and Impact

The Israeli military has constructed a network of barriers, stretching over 42km, covering a significant portion of the Yellow Line. These barriers have a profound impact on the daily lives of Gazans, creating a deadly no-go zone and restricting their movement.

Satellite images and expert analysis reveal that Israel’s earthworks suggest a long-term occupation strategy. The barriers encroach on Gaza’s territory, pushing the de facto border deeper into the strip. In some areas, the Yellow Line has been moved over 500m, significantly reducing the available space for Gazans.

The IDF maintains that these measures are for security and to clearly mark the Yellow Line, but the construction of bases and outposts along the barrier raises questions about Israel’s intentions.

The situation in Gaza is complex, with both sides presenting differing narratives. While Israel asserts its right to protect its citizens, the expansion of the Yellow Line and the resulting displacement of families have severe consequences for the Gazan population.
