F1 Adapts to Uncertain Times

In a recent call with F1 media, Domenicali confirmed that the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are still on the calendar, with both events already sold out, showcasing the sport’s resilience and global appeal.

A Decision by Mid-September

However, the F1 boss was quick to add that a final decision on the season finale will be made by mid-September. If the Middle East remains unstable, the championship could conclude in Europe, with the historic Imola circuit in Italy as a strong contender.

This contingency plan comes after the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races, originally scheduled for April, due to the US-Israel war with Iran. F1 has swiftly adapted, with Malaysia stepping in to host a race in September, ensuring the season meets the required 21 grands prix.

A Balancing Act

Domenicali emphasized the importance of finding the right balance in the calendar, especially with the introduction of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. He stated, “We don’t want to ruin a jewel that is growing.” The F1 president also acknowledged the competition from the NFL in the US during this period, underlining the need for strategic planning.

As for the 2027 season, Domenicali revealed that contingency plans are in place should the war persist. The calendar will be presented in autumn, with alternative options ready if needed. The focus remains on maintaining a diverse 24-country schedule.
