A recent investigation by Electrical Safety First (ESF) has revealed a potential safety concern with travel adaptors sold online. The consumer safety group tested 14 products from popular e-commerce platforms and found that all failed to meet UK safety standards.

The Risks of Unsafe Adaptors

The implications of using unsafe adaptors can be severe. ESF’s product safety engineer, Giuseppe Capanna, warns that some devices could expose users to the risk of electric shock or electrocution.

Capanna advises consumers to be vigilant when purchasing travel adaptors, especially from online retailers. He suggests looking for trusted brands and retailers to ensure a safer experience.

What to Look For in a Safe Adaptor

To ensure you’re buying a safe travel adaptor, there are a few key features to look out for. Firstly, check that the adaptor has safety shutters, which prevent access to live internal parts. Secondly, ensure it has a surge protector, as some adaptors may claim to have this feature but lack it.

Additionally, pay attention to the pins. Only one set of pins should be able to come out at a time, and they should not be easily removable. ESF found that some adaptors had pins that snapped off under force, which could lead to potential hazards.

Online Marketplaces Respond

The online marketplaces involved have taken swift action. AliExpress, Amazon, eBay, and TikTok have all removed the flagged products from sale and emphasized their commitment to product safety.

AliExpress has gone a step further by initiating a recall for affected customers and reviewing similar listings to ensure they meet safety standards.

A Call for Stronger Regulation

While the prompt response from online retailers is encouraging, ESF believes more can be done. They advocate for stricter regulations to hold online sellers accountable for product safety.

Consumer group Which? supports this stance, highlighting the need for better protection against dangerous electrical goods sold online.
