UK’s Hotter Summers: Are We Ready for the Heat?

UK’s Record-Breaking Heatwave

The UK is bracing for a scorcher of a summer, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels. In parts of southern England, the mercury could reach a sweltering 37C or higher, smashing the previous June high.

This follows an unusually hot May, and scientists warn that even hotter temperatures are on the horizon.

“We expect increasing temperatures and the breaking of temperature records due to climate change,” says Lizzie Kendon, a climate science professor at the University of Bristol and head of climate projections at the UK Met Office.

But it’s the margin by which these records are being broken that is truly extraordinary.

A Warmer Climate

UK summers have been getting warmer, with a notable increase in days exceeding 30C. The Met Office reports that between 2015 and 2024, these hot days more than tripled compared to the 1961-1990 average.

The UK’s hottest recorded temperature, set in July 2022, stands at a scorching 40.3C. This is a far cry from the 20th Century, when reaching 35C was a rare event.

These records are just the beginning, as climate change continues to drive up temperatures.

Preparing for the Heat

The Climate Change Committee (CCC), the government’s independent adviser, has criticized the lack of preparation for the UK’s changing climate. The UK’s infrastructure, from railways to homes, was built for a climate that no longer exists.

The CCC urges the government to prioritize preparations for extreme heat, recommending cooling technologies and setting maximum temperature rules for workplaces.

In Europe, working conditions and school schedules are adapted during heat alerts, ensuring the safety and well-being of workers and students.

As the UK faces hotter summers, it’s essential to take action now to protect our health, infrastructure, and way of life.
