UK Heatwave: Navigating Work and School

UK Heatwave: What to Expect

The Met Office has issued a rare red warning for extreme heat, with temperatures set to soar in parts of England and Wales. This week, temperatures could reach a scorching 40C, prompting a range of measures to keep everyone safe.

Schools: Keeping Cool and Carrying On

While there’s no legal maximum temperature for classrooms, schools are taking proactive steps to ensure students’ well-being. Teaching unions recommend a maximum indoor temperature of 26C, and school leaders are closely monitoring conditions.

Some schools are relaxing uniform rules, allowing students to wear PE kits, and adjusting start and finish times to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Lessons may move to cooler areas, and physical activity will be adapted to the heat.

Schools are also advised to use CO2 monitors to ensure good ventilation and follow UKHSA guidance on window management and fan usage.

Workplaces: Adapting to the Heat

There’s no legal temperature limit for workplaces, but employers must ensure a comfortable environment. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises keeping workplaces well-ventilated and providing fresh air. Acas, a workplace advice group, encourages workers to collaborate with employers to find safe solutions.

Last month, the Climate Change Committee (CCC) recommended introducing a maximum workplace temperature to protect employees during heatwaves.

Staying Safe and Comfortable

Whether at school or work, staying cool is key. Wear loose, light-coloured clothing, and use sunscreen with high SPF. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and if working from home, keep curtains closed during the day to block out the sun.

For outdoor workers, rescheduling tasks to cooler times and taking frequent breaks in shaded areas is essential. Removing personal protective equipment during rest periods can help keep workers cool.

The heatwave may affect transport, so plan ahead and consider adjusting travel times. Stay informed and follow official guidance to ensure a safe and comfortable experience during this exceptional weather.
