A Critical Incident at the Zoo

A three-year-old boy’s visit to Johnsons of Old Hurst, a family-run farm and zoo near Huntingdon, took a terrifying turn when he ended up in a crocodile enclosure. The boy, from Cambridgeshire, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The incident occurred on Thursday, and police were called to the scene at 13:34 BST.

The Suspect and His Circumstances

A 30-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been bailed. Police stated he was “unfit for interview” due to learning disabilities. The man, from Norfolk, was not part of an organized group visit.

A witness reported seeing the man, accompanied by two women who may have been carers, walking through the zoo shortly before the incident.

The Crocodile Enclosure

The zoo’s Tropical House, home to the crocodile enclosure, has been closed as a mark of respect to the boy’s family. Crocodiles, including Nile crocodiles and American alligators, are housed in a converted cattle barn with elevated walkways for visitors.

The enclosure’s safety measures, such as high fences and steel mesh fencing, are under scrutiny as authorities investigate the incident.

A Brave Rescue

Tracey Johnson, a zoo staff member, displayed remarkable courage by entering the enclosure and pulling the boy to safety. Chris Newman, director of the National Centre For Reptile Welfare, praised her bravery, emphasizing the reactive nature of crocodiles.

The boy’s family is receiving support from specialist officers, while the community rallies around them. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the incident.
