Ryanair Passengers Stranded in Greece: Navigating Airport Delays

Ryanair Flight Leaves Passengers Behind

In a recent incident, a Ryanair flight from Athens to London Luton reportedly left without 20 to 50 passengers, causing frustration and anger. The flight, scheduled for Sunday, encountered delays at passport control, leading to a backlog of passengers.

This event highlights the challenges faced by airports and airlines in managing increased processing times due to new border control procedures.

The Impact of the EU’s Entry Exit System

The EU’s Entry Exit System (EES) has been a significant factor in these delays. Implemented to track non-EU citizens entering or leaving the Schengen area, it has resulted in longer queues and wait times at airports.

Despite assurances from Greek tourism minister Olga Kefalogianni in April, promising British passengers a seamless travel experience, the situation remains unclear. The Greek Foreign Ministry later disputed any exemption from biometric checks, adding to the confusion.

Passengers Share Their Experiences

Milo Boyd, a travel writer, described a “mega queue” at Athens International Airport, with hundreds of passengers waiting in stifling temperatures. He and his wife managed to board the flight, but many others were left behind.

“These poor people were pleading with the staff,” Boyd recounted. “It was a difficult situation for everyone involved.”

Other passengers, like Karen Alarcon Cabada from California, have also experienced similar delays, emphasizing the need for improved efficiency at passport control.

Airlines and Airports Respond

Ryanair attributed the incident to border control delays, while Athens International Airport acknowledged congestion due to additional processing requirements. Both parties are working to address these challenges.

In May, the UK boss of Wizz Air advised British holidaymakers to arrive at European airports three hours in advance, reflecting the changing landscape of air travel.

As airports and airlines adapt to new procedures, it’s essential to stay informed and plan accordingly to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Remember, staying patient and prepared is key to navigating these evolving airport processes.
