Matka King Triumphs: Vijay Varma’s Series Overcomes Legal Hurdle

In a significant development for the entertainment industry, the Bombay High Court has granted relief to Roy Kapur Productions in a legal dispute over the title of their web series, 'Matka King'. This decision ensures the series, starring Vijay Varma, can continue streaming on Prime Video without any legal obstacles.

The case was initiated by Ms. Tanuja Bhagat, who filed a suit and an interim application, claiming that the title 'Matka King' infringed upon her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat's, legacy. She asserted that Kalyanji Bhagat was the original 'Matka King' and that the series was based on his life without her authorization.

The matter was heard on April 15, 2026, before Justice Sharmila Deshmukh. The court, after considering both parties' submissions, refused to grant interim relief to Ms. Bhagat. This meant that Roy Kapur Productions and the other defendants were not restrained from releasing the series.

At the subsequent hearing on April 20, Ms. Bhagat's counsel informed the court of her decision to withdraw the suit. The court then disposed of the suit and interim application, bringing the legal challenge to a close. This allowed 'Matka King' to continue streaming without any further interruptions.

The eight-episode series, set in 1960s Bombay, premiered on Prime Video on April 17, 2026. Directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, it showcases the rise of Brij Bhatti, played by Vijay Varma, who transforms the Matka gambling game from an underground activity into a nationwide sensation. The stellar cast includes Saie Tamhankar, Kritika Kamra, and Gulshan Grover, among others.

'Matka King' has garnered attention and praise from industry veterans like Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Rajkumar Hirani. With the recent court ruling, the series continues its successful run, solidifying its place among the notable digital releases of the month.
