French Boy Rescued After Being Locked in Van for Months
In a heart-wrenching case, a nine-year-old boy was rescued by police in Hagenbach, France, after being locked in a van since November 2024.
The boy's father, 43, claimed he was protecting his son from his partner, who allegedly wanted to place the child in psychiatric care. The father has been charged with 'sequestration and arbitrary detention of a minor' and is in custody.
The mother, 37, has been charged with failing to assist the child and not reporting his mistreatment. She has been granted conditional bail.
According to the prosecutor, Nicolas Heitz, the boy was found naked and malnourished, lying on a mound of trash and near excrement. He had been deprived of proper food and medical care.
The boy's siblings, a 12-year-old sister and a 10-year-old half-sister, lived with the couple in an apartment. The boy told police his father brought him food and water, and he had to use plastic bottles and bin bags for his bodily functions.
Neighbours were shocked by the discovery, with one resident, Danielle, expressing disbelief and horror. The boy's sudden disappearance at the end of 2024 had raised concerns, but the couple had explained that he was in care.
This case highlights the importance of community vigilance and the need for swift action to protect vulnerable children. The boy's rescue is a testament to the effectiveness of concerned citizens reporting suspicious activities.
