Peru Football Tragedy: One Dead, Many Injured

A pre-match event at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, Peru, turned tragic as one person lost their life and dozens sustained injuries. The incident occurred on Friday, a day before a highly anticipated derby match between local rivals Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes.

Initial reports indicated a potential wall collapse, but Alianza Lima and fire officials have refuted these claims, stating there were no structural failures. The club has extended its condolences and pledged full cooperation with authorities to uncover the cause of the incident.

The Peruvian health minister, Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero, confirmed the fatality and reported 47 injuries, with three individuals in critical condition. Fire chief Marcos Pajuelo assured the public that the stadium's structure remains intact, with no collapsed walls or debris.

The interior ministry's initial statement mentioned an emergency involving trapped individuals, prompting a response from 40 firefighters. Despite the tragedy, the Peruvian professional soccer league announced that Saturday's match would go ahead as scheduled, emphasizing their commitment to safety.

The Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, affectionately known as Matute, was constructed in the 1970s and has a capacity of over 33,900 seats. While modernization efforts have been limited, the club has explored plans to enhance the stadium's capacity and build a new arena.
