Transatlantic Stowaway: Fox’s Journey from Southampton to New York

In a remarkable tale of resilience and adventure, a male red fox embarked on an unexpected journey from Southampton, UK, to New York City, USA. This cunning creature, now affectionately dubbed the 'transatlantic stowaway', has found a new home at the Bronx Zoo after a 3,400-mile voyage.

The fox's journey began on February 4th, when it boarded a cargo ship transporting cars from Southampton, Hampshire. Its presence went unnoticed until the vessel docked at the Port of New York and New Jersey on February 18th. US Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the fox, and a collaborative effort ensued to ensure its well-being.

Diane J. Sabatino, Executive Assistant Commissioner, shared the news on X, highlighting the teamwork between various agencies. Agriculture specialists coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service, and New Jersey Fish and Wildlife to find a suitable home for the fox.

The fox, estimated to be two years old and weighing 5kg, was promptly transported to the Bronx Zoo. Keith Lovett, the zoo's director of animal programs, expressed his relief, stating, 'He seems to be settling in well. It's gone through a lot.'

The zoo's veterinary team is conducting thorough health checks to ensure the fox's well-being. The omnivore is being fed a balanced diet of produce, proteins, and biscuit-like treats. Once the health assessments are complete, the zoo will find a long-term home for this adventurous mammal.

This red fox, scientifically known as Vulpes vulpes, is a widespread species found in Europe, Asia, North America, and parts of Africa. Its ability to adapt to various environments is a testament to its resilience, making this transatlantic journey a fascinating chapter in its species' history.
